Dale Farm has been given the green light by the Office of Fair Trading to buy the liquid milk business of Fane Valley Co-op.

The watchdog yesterday ruled out referring the transaction to the Competition Commission.

The deal, announced in November, marked Fane Valley’s exit from the Northern Irish fresh milk market. At the time, Fane Valley chief executive Trevor Lockhart cited declining margins due to increased processing costs as a factor in its decision to sell.

The co-operative society continues to process products including red meat and oats.
