First Milk has received planning permission for a £17m redevelopment of its cheese packing site in Maelor.

The dairy company announced today that Wrexham Borough Council’s planning committee had given the green light to plans for the site to be turned into a “UK centre of excellence” for cheese packing and storage.

The redevelopment will see First Milk redesign and rebuild its cheese packing operation at Maelor. In addition, storage company Grocontinental will build a cold store on First Milk’s Maelor site, which was also been approved by Wrexham council.

In total, First Milk and Grocontinental will spend £17m to redevelop the site.

First Milk said construction work would start shortly and was scheduled for completion in autumn 2013.

Manufacturing director Paul Rowe said First Milk’s plans for Maelor had received “very positive feedback” from retailers, “who can see the clear benefits from the redevelopment in terms of workflows, efficiencies and the scope it provides to increase production.”

He added: “I’d like to thank Wrexham Borough Council who have worked with us in a constructive way throughout this process.”
