Greene King, the brewer and pub operator behind top premium ale Old Speckled Hen, has announced a rise in volumes at its brewing arm for the past year.

In its latest trading statement, covering the 49 weeks to 11 April, the Norfolk-based business said its brewing company had outperformed the market with a rise in volumes of almost 4%.

The company also said like-for-like sales were up across its pub business, although pre-tax profits slipped from last year.

“We are still cautious for the remainder of 2010 as election uncertainty, rising taxes, public sector cutbacks and fragile consumer confidence may continue to limit consumer spending,” Greene King said in a statement.

“Nevertheless, we are confident we can meet these challenges and that the strength of our consumer offer… will ensure we continue to deliver sector-leading performance.”
