Marston's Beer Company has been rapped by the Advertising Standards Authority over a misleading ad that claimed the company was the UK's largest brewer of quality premium cask ales.

Rival Greene King complained that the ad, which featured cricketer Matthew Hoggard, did not make clear that the claim included Marston's brewing figures for Bass, which is not one of the brewer's brands.

Marston's argued that it was "widely understood" in the UK beer market that it brewed Bass on behalf of InBev. However, the ASA upheld the complaint and Marston's was told to clarify its reference to brands in future adverts.
