Greene King has reported a 2% increase in pre-tax profit to £142m on sales up 5% at £960.5m for the year to 4 May.

The brewer said its own brands had performed especially strongly in the take-home market, with Old Speckled Hen growing 28% in volume in supermarkets and its share of the category growing by two full percentage points to 11.9%.

Own-brewed volume rose 6%, with Greene King IPA, Old Speckled Hen and Abbot Ale growing 4%, 9% and 12% respectively.

“The economy is not likely to improve in the short term, and we are not immune to the difficulties this presents for our market, but we are better placed than many others, thanks to the resilience and flexibility of our business and our team,” added Greene King CEO Rooney Anand.
