Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking picked up gold at the world's biggest blind-tasting competition for its Sparkling Cuvée Greenfields 2003.

Though it was the only English gold winner, English wines bagged a record haul of medals - 21 - at the William Reed-organised International Wine Challenge. Other winners included Ridgeview Merret Bloomsbury 2004 and Breaky Bottom Brut 2003.

Denbies also won bronze awards for its 2005 Sparkling Rosé Cuvée and Baccus and Ortega varietal wines.

France retained its position as the country making the finest wine, and was awarded 635 medals.
