Asda's bargain battered cod fillets, Mr Muscle bathroom cleaner and Wall's Magnum Classic helped the retailer comfortably secure the top spot this week.

Asda's £43.85 basket undercut Tesco by £2 and offered 26 of the cheapest or joint-cheapest items. The retailer made two hikes and five small cuts, knocking 2p off the Volvic Flavoured Water and a penny from the Kellogg's Optivita, fresh garlic, Total Greek Yoghurt and Whiskas Pouches.

Despite making 10 reductions, Tesco remained in second place. Its most dramatic price cut was £1.28 off the Lynx Shower Gel thanks to a new round-pound deal. It increased the price of Wall's Magnum Classic, though, by 39p.

Sainsbury's followed in third place with a basket 99p pricier than Tesco's. It offered the cheapest healthy-eating garlic baguettes at 23p, but its PG Tips Pyramid bags were the second-priciest at £2.12.

Morrisons lagged behind in fourth but undercut Waitrose by a wide £4.86 margin. It made few changes week-on-week, adding 31p to the quarter pounder beef burgers and slicing 4p off the healthy-eating garlic baguette.

Waitrose offered the most expensive basket at £54.05 It made no hikes, but knocked 3p off the plum tomatoes.
