The first British farm standard for halal meat is expected to be up and running by the beginning of 2010.

The European Halal Development Agency was formed this month to set out the specifications for the standard.

The agency is holding discussions with Red Tractor operator Assured British Meat over adding a halal 'bolt-on' to the Red Tractor scheme. Farmers and processors would gain halal accreditation by undergoing extra checks such as ensuring no pig manure fertiliser or alcohol disinfectants were used.
