The Department of Health has proposed extending the Healthy Start voucher scheme to frozen fruit and veg in a bid to drive up consumption of produce by low-income families.

The scheme, which aims to make healthy foods more affordable to pregnant women and young families, currently only covers milk and fresh produce. The DH said frozen fruit and veg could contain "as many if not more vitamins than poorly stored fresh produce".

A consultation on the proposals runs until December.
