Latest official data show the French bought more than 8,000t of UK sheepmeat during January-March, only about 25% less than in the first quarter last year. Most market forecasters and UK exporters' rivals believe that the recovery could take much greater volumes out of the domestic market in the next few months. A possible problem is the French government's imminent tightening of anti-BSE controls, which could restrict imports of lamb carcases from the UK. However the effect of this on the market here might be cancelled out by diversion of some New Zealand supplies from this country to the French market. {{MEAT }}
