Keeping away from aggressive discounting in the beer market is paying dividends for regional brewer Greene King. The company reported a 4.6% increase in volume sales of its ales in the 36 weeks to January 3, and managing director Rooney Anand said its performance in the off-trade was ahead of this. He said sales had been led by flagship brand Old Speckled Hen which he claimed was the number one premium bottled ale with a 10% share. Anand said Greene King was one of the biggest investors in the sector and has a budget of £500,000 to support Old Speckled Hen. He added: "The growth has been achieved without resorting to aggressive pricing." {{NEWS }}
