Global meat giant Bestmeat looks set to expand its empire further by buying Hendrix Meat Group, Holland’s second largest producer of bacon.
Bestmeat is said to be paying ?75 million for Hendrix, which is owned by Dutch global food and feed company Nutreco.
The sale, which will be subject to approval by the competition authorities, follows Bestmeat’s acquisition in July last year of Dutch bacon giant Dumeco and last November of a controlling share in German company NFZ.
Bestmeat is already the biggest specialist producer of fresh pork and beef in Europe and Dumeco is Holland’s biggest supplier of bacon to the UK market.
Hendrix Meat Group’s marketing and communications manager Marc van der Lee welcomed the sale. “We can strengthen our position in the market,” he said. However, he denied the sale was influenced by poor bacon prices caused by extra supply on the market from Denmark. “Hendrix couldn’t grow within Nutreco.”
