Wholesaler Hensons is pitching less popular male turkeys to catering customers as a way of keeping down turkey prices this Christmas.

‘Tom’ turkeys - or turkey cocks - are less popular than hens because their larger size, at 12kg on average, makes them an inconvenient size for some ovens.

This year, Hensons is offering boned and stuffed Red Tractor-approved male turkeys, which weigh between 4kg and 8kg and cost £4.99 per kg.

It claims the prepared product reduces caterers’ costs by up to one third per serving, when factoring in the lower cost of tom turkeys and reduced wastage - the prepared turkeys do not contain tendon or bone.
