New figures from Information Resources suggest chilled ready meals, fresh produce, beers, wines and spirits and fresh fish are the key growth areas in the grocery sector. Its figures for the 12 months to March 2002, based on scanning data from all the major multiples, show a 20% increase in sales of chilled ready meals, with retailers' premium own label ranges adding value to the category. Product shortage drove fresh produce sales values up 13.6% to £5.2bn, and beer and alcopops sales accounted for an 11.9% increase in the BWS category to £5bn. Fresh fish sales were up 13.3% to £544m, compared to fairly static growth on fresh meat at £2.8bn for the year. {{NEWS }}
