Consumer demand for shellfish from the Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group (SSMG) has increased so much in the past year that the co-operative this week opened a £700k live shellfish packing and storage unit near Glasgow. Scots fisheries minister Allan Wilson MSP opened the new premises, which handle the production of SSMG's 20 farmer members. According to chairman Walter Speirs, sales of live mussels, scallops and oysters have never been better, while demand for SSMG's fresh, chilled in-sauce range are set to treble. "By opening a dedicated live shellfish unit, we have freed-up space in our existing premises to enable us to forge ahead with NPD on our value-added lines," he said. "Development work is going well and we aim to launch a couple of products this year," he added. SSMG sells to retailers and wholesalers in the UK, Belgium and Switzerland, including Waitrose, Sainsbury, Tesco and Morrisons. {{MEAT }}
