The government has launched a new guide designed to help high streets compete with the challenges posed by online retailers such as Amazon.
The Great British High Street’s Good Practice Guide includes case studies from the country’s most thriving high streets to give other towns tips on how to boost business and increase footfall.
Tips include having an app, creating pop-ups and putting on events with “street theatre”.
It also gives the most up-to-date advice on areas such as business rates relief, parking charges and using social media. “The guide celebrates the hard work of local people, and the secrets of their success, which have made our high streets even better places to live, shop and work in the 21st century,” said high streets minister Marcus Jones.
“There is great work happening on the ground to adapt the high street to the needs of the modern life, and I’m determined we capture this.”
