A Welsh dairy farming couple have come up with an unusual taste combination as a way of adding value to their organic milk.

Sanclêr yoghurt cheese is the brainchild of husband and wife team Elfyn and Rhian Davies, who decided to use the milk from their dairy herd in St Clears when milk prices plummeted.

Yoghurt cheese is a traditional dairy product made by removing excess whey from yoghurt and is often found in the Middle East where it is sometimes called Labneh or Labaneh. "The cheese is organic, healthy and natural, and we think it will appeal to those who are interested in their health," said Elfyn.

The probiotic product, with no added salt or additives, is suitable for vegetarians and comes in three varieties: natural, with basil and garlic, and with chives.

Sanclêr yoghurt cheese is packed bilingually in 150g pots for both English and Welsh speakers. "It will be available through independent health food stores in South Wales initially but we are in talks with distributors," added Elfyn.
