Diageo PLC is considering shutting down the St James's Gate brewery in Dublin, which has made Guinness for close to 250 years, as part of a review of operations by the group, it was reported today.

The drinks conglomerate is thought to be looking at its investment options for its brewing operations in Dublin, Dundalk and Kilkenny to enhance the long-term competitiveness and sustainability of the business in Ireland.

David Gosnell, managing director of Diageo said no final decision was likely before mid- 2008.
