The pinch of the credit crunch on consumer spending eased last weekend as warm weather boosted sales.
A Tesco spokesman said sales of its frozen BBQ range - which includes burgers and chicken wings - were up 169% on the same period the year before. Waitrose also reported strong year-on-year growth for summer lines, particularly 'picnic' food. Sales of dips rose 22% on the same week last year, pâté was up 18% and dressings were up by a third, a spokeswoman added.
At M&S, sales of its Aberdeen Angus burgers rose 95% while at Asda sales of fruit, salads and BBQ foods were up by more than 60%.
