Spanish growers are optimistic that the much anticipated sunny weather will boost melon sales after a dreadful 2008.

The first Galia, Honeydew and Cantaloupe varieties of the new season from Andalusia hit UK shelves last week. A total of 300,000 tonnes of melons and 470,000 tonnes of watermelons are expected to be sent to the UK in May and June.

Last year melon sales collapsed 10% by volume as poor weather hit sales.

Promoter Hortyfruta will also run a UK PR and sampling campaign.
