Some of the statistics often cited as proof of the post-BSE recovery in demand for beef are suspect, to put it mildly, but they withstand close inspection better than the figures for lamb and pork. The increase in beef purchases reported by Taylor Nelson Sofres for the four weeks to July 23, 12.8%, loses some sparkle when last year's 6% drop is put back into the calculation, yet there has been real growth over the two years.
