Hungarian apple growers are investing in modern varieties in a strategy to increase exports after joining the EU next year.
Red varieties such as the traditional Jonathan and Ida Red, which still make up the largest proportion of a 650,000 tonne crop, are being supported by several strains of Gala, Regal Prince, Pinova, and Sampion.
There are plans to increase irrigation to boost yields and to establish more producer organisations qualifying for aid.
