Asda raised the stakes in the banana price war by cutting the price of a kilo from 68p to 62p, with Tesco following suit. As The Grocer went to press, Sainsbury's and Morrisons had not cut prices.
The FSA is expected to approve echium oil and baobab dried fruit pulp as novel food ingredients. Echium oil is high in Omega-3 and -6 and is wanted for use in milk drinks. Baobab pulp is proposed for smoothies and cereal bars.
Straight to store
Six Tesco stores in Edinburgh will be the first to sell fresh locally-grown potatoes delivered straight into stores on the day they are lifted. The trial is being run by Tesco Scotland and supplier Greenvale AP.
