Cox on the way 

The first British Cox should hit retail shelves in the week commencing 10 September. The class one crop will be about 43,000 tonnes again, with an unknown quantity of hail-damaged class twos. 

Naked cucumbers 

The Co-operative Group is launching "naked" cucumbers without any plastic shrink wrapping. The Co-op says smart liners in crates will protect the fruit, and expects the move to save eight tonnes of packaging a year. 

No anti-cancer role 

Australian researchers have found that eating fruit and vegetables has "zero impact" on cancer levels and offers no protection. Obesity was the prime risk factor behind cancer, not diet, they claimed.
