Danish cut costs

The Danish Bacon and Meat Council is feeling the burn of low meat prices and has announced plans to make 10% of its workforce redundant. Danske Slagterier is sacking 40 Danish staff in an effort to cut costs and refocus its business on R&D, political lobbying and animal health. DS exported some 320,000 tonnes of pigmeat to the UK last year, of which 120,000 tonnes were bacon.

Barbecued venison

Yorkshire-based Holme Farmed Venison has built on 75% Christmas sales growth by closing new deals with three major supermarkets for its venison steaks, grill steaks and sausages. The meat has proven popular for barbecues, said MD Nigel Sampson. Low-fat grill steaks are now in 394 Sainsbury stores.
