Rising milk prices have hit profits at Glanbia Cheese and its consumer products division.Turnover in the six months to 30 June at the division fell 1.3% to £169m, but group sales rose 13% to £705m.
Clarification
Overall milk consumption has not fallen by 3%, as claimed in the Consumer Insight column (18 August, p61). It has risen - it is only drinking milk consumption that has fallen.
EU milk trade
The NFU has seized on a Defra report into the trade in liquid milk between Britain and the Continent as support for the theory that Britain should not be considered a closed market when competition authorities are assessing acquisitions by dairy companies.
