Alaskan canners are preparing for the start of the Bristol Bay red salmon run in four weeks' time. Pre-season forecasts for both red and pink salmon catches remain good, and test fishing off the Aleutians has given positive signs that red numbers are within forecasts. "We will be pushing canners to get finished product down to Seattle for export to the UK as quickly as possible," said an importer. Product has to go through a government inspection programme before being labelled for export, so new season packs will not be available until October. Trade sources say retailers may be out of stock of 418g cans by then.
