>>independents outperform multiples in canned premium lager by 3%

Canned premium lager has been one of the star category performers in the co-ops, symbols and independents, with an 8% growth against last year and 3% above the multiple grocers, according to ACNielsen Scantrack. Growth of lager as a whole in the sector was up by 6%.

Canned premium lager (Stella Artois, Kronenbourg, Budweiser) showed faster growth than bottled lager, at 4%, in the sector and was only just behind standard lager, at 10%. With lager accounting for a third of all alcoholic drinks sales in the sector, this suggests that while shoppers are happy to buy the four, 12 or 24-packs at superstores on an out-of-town shop, and on price, the more immediate need for premium alcoholic refreshment is still well served by a local, high street store.
