EU fisheries commissioner Maria Damanaki has caused a rift in the UK industry after announcing plans to ban fish discards at sea.

On Tuesday Damanaki tabled the introduction of a total ban on fish discards into proposed reforms of the Common Fisheries Policy, following the Fish Fight campaign by TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall on Channel 4.

The news was welcomed by Young's Seafood CEO Leendert den Hollander, who said "throwing away fish is clearly wrong". However, the Scottish Fishermen's Organisation said the proposals were draconian. A ban could have "very serious consequences for a vitally important economic sector that supports many communities," said CEO Bertie Armstrong.

Damanaki has proposed a gradual approach to implementing a discard ban, starting with the pelagic fisheries.
