Heveco Mushrooms, based in Thakeham, West Sussex, has begun a three-year investment programme to increase its production of washed and pre-sliced mushrooms.
The company believes that demand for washed and pre-sliced mushrooms is about to spiral. Tom Derks, chairman, said the market will undergo major changes because of increasing demand for washed and sliced mushrooms, a booming food service sector and the rise of ready meals.
More ‘ready to use’ sliced fresh mushrooms in sealed bags will appear on retail shelves, he added. “Sliced mushrooms are appealing more and more to retailers because of their total traceability, convenience and enhanced hygiene,” Derks said.
