The World Cup and the hot summer helped beer giant AB InBev record an impressive hike in half-year sales.

The Stella and Beck's brewer said UK volume sales rose 18.6% in the first quarter of the year and by 11.4% over the first six months, when global volumes rose 1.5%.

Growth was driven by good weather and strong sales of Budweiser, which was an official sponsor of the World Cup and benefited from its multimillion summer campaign Predict & Win.

UK president Stuart MacFarlane admitted the beer market remained challenging but said: "Looking at half-year performance compared with the same period last year, Budweiser has grown volumes by more than 70%."

AB InBev is expected to introduce its new, premium Budweiser 66 lager into UK retail this month.
