Sainsbury is to go exclusively English on Braeburn, albeit for a short period of time.
Apples buyer Marcus Hogarth said Sainsbury had been working hard with UK growers to improve Braeburn volumes and had now reached a point where it could subsitute UK fruit for European-grown apples.
However, volumes are still low and although Sainsbury would offer 100% English in all its stores, that could only be sustained for less than a week.
Hogarth said: “We’re looking to get between 150 to 200 tonnes this year.”
