The Kenyan government has criticised the Soil Association's plans to make airfreighted organic produce adhere to fair trade principles.

High commissioner Joseph Muchemi said the move, which was unveiled three weeks ago, was unfair to African growers.

"It is unreasonable to impose stricter ethical standards on Kenyan farmers (along with the associated costs and procedures), while farmers in the UK do not have to adhere to these standards - even though their carbon footprint may be far greater," he said.
