Italians seek PGI Kiwifruit growers in the Latina region of Italy are hoping to enhance the status of their fruit by convincing Brussels to award Protected Geographical Indication for the crop. They claim that while the varieties are the same, the frost free climatic conditions which allow harvesting up to a month later than other areas create a special taste, apart from giving the fruit improved storage opportunities. The move to establish a special point of difference is also a reflection of the increased competitiveness of the world market. Italy is already the largest global producer followed by New Zealand. The Latina region has a 100,000t production which is still expanding. Chile's production is the third largest. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
