Kraft Foods has appointed Heineken boss Jean-François van Boxmeer as a non-executive director, as the US food giant steps up its efforts to gain control of Cadbury.

Van Boxmeer, who will remain with the drinks giant, will join the Kraft board within weeks, according to reports.

Kraft chief executive Irene Rosenfeld described him as “a builder of iconic, global brands with a strong track record for driving revenue growth and leading acquisitions and integrations”.

As well as van Boxmeer, Kraft has also added former Hershey board member Mackey McDonald as a director.
