An increasing shortage of southern hemisphere citrus cloud means that gaps may appear before the Mediterranean crop takes over.
This is compounded by the processing industry feeling the effect, particularly for Valencia Lates. Usually, smaller sizes, used for juice and concentrate, are channelled into this sector, but a light crop has also meant competition with the fresh market, which normally takes the larger fruit.
Prices on UK wholesale markets at this time of year for 105 counts are already up by £2 carton reaching £7, compared with last year.
The situation will resolve itself in November when the seasons switch.
