The 9000th product to be certified by the Marine Stewardship Council has gone into Waitrose stores.

MSC eco-labelled Waitrose oat-crumbed Scottish mackerel fillets hit fish counters at the supermarket last week. They are sourced from the Scottish Pelagic Sustainability Group western mackerel fishery, which obtained certification in 2008.

"We are delighted to have played a role in helping the MSC achieve this great result, which highlights how increasingly important it is to consumers and retailers alike that the fish they buy and sell is sustainable," said Waitrose fish buyer Jeremy Langley.

Waitrose sells 30 MSC-certified seafood products.
