Sir, The article ‘Do our British milk farmers need fair trade protection?’ (14 July) raises important issues about how to share risk and reward in dairy.
Our Ethical Trade certification deals with just this issue. We considered a minimum price per commodity along the lines of the Fairtrade Foundation but decided this was too unwieldy.
Instead, every member of the scheme is independently assessed for fair trading relationships, fair employment conditions and social and cultural contributions. I’d commend this approach to all who seek a fairer deal for UK producers.
