Sir: Reference to the environmental impact of bottled water should include the fact that its carbon footprint is lower than that of other drinks (‘The only way is ethics but whose?’, 10 November). The packaging is 100% recyclable and the recycling rate for plastic bottles has grown consistently in recent years to reach 48%.The underground sources from which natural mineral water is drawn must be protected from all pollution and water may only be taken from them at a sustainable rate. Bottled water is at the forefront of preserving resources for future generations.
