Sir, The issue with Britain’s Biggest Brands (The Grocer, 3 March) is not ownership or who provides the investment capital. It’s about geography.

If the brand is made in the UK to standards we are all happy to subscribe to, ownership becomes largely irrelevant. The food and drink industry is currently the UK’s largest manufacturing sector and the FDF has recently committed to 20% sustainable growth by 2020. To achieve this we need to keep standards high, maintain a competitive edge, be the best at marketing, develop exports and gain access to capital for investment.

Increasing globalisation suits us very well as a trading nation. Let’s carry on producing world-class food. Obtaining capital to achieve all this can be difficult, so if we can get money from abroad then why not?
