Sir: DHL’s revolutionary new vehicle (DHL looks to keep the noise down with new lorry’, 29 November, p10), emits less harmful emissions, has a large field of direct vision and is significantly quieter. However, there is more to be done than solely technological advances.
Retiming deliveries and collections to avoid the peak periods, reducing the demand and consolidating measures can all contribute. A high street with fewer lorries is a more pleasant one, and a more pleasant high street is a more attractive area for customers to visit and shop.
The London Re-Timing Deliveries Consortium has demonstrated what can be achieved when organisations work in partnership. Dispelling myths and perceptions of barriers to retiming has led to changing practices.
