Sir, Johanna Buitelaar Warden of AB Sustain is right in her call to stop demonising soya (Third Party, 10 September). But she is wrong to say the debate on GM versus non-GM soya is “largely academic”.

It requires a practical, hands-on engagement with growers globally to ensure non-GM soya supplies for brands like Alpro, which is committed to long-term non-GM use.

Soya bean prices have risen on average by 13% a year since 2007, but the premium paid in addition for non-GM has risen by over 160% of the total since 1997. But we believe it is an approach retailers appreciate and consumers demand.
