food waste

I read your article ‘Stop blaming consumers for waste, expert tells retailers’ with interest and wanted to reassure readers that the fresh produce category is not just sitting back and ignoring the problem.

Julian Parfitt has called for the industry to step up to the plate and take responsibility for the waste issue - a statement with which I agree.

However, it is not just the responsibility of retailers to tackle wastage. The whole supply chain, including manufacturers, must also help to ensure consumers are buying only what they want and so use what they buy.

Florette has recently taken an important step towards this goal by optimising sizes and prices proportionally to better meet researched consumer usage, and has changed on-pack portion communication to language consumers recognise, for example ‘platefuls’ and ‘handfuls’.

Across the industry we must all take action to help meet wastage targets, and what better place to start than with the consumer and helping them to buy the quantity they actually need.
