Sir: Despite great work from the industry on combating food waste, domestic waste continues to be a major concern.

The Waste & Resources Action Programme WRAP estimate that it equates to 7.2 billion tonnes each year, with milk waste a particular area for concern. Tetra Pak recently commissioned research showing eight in 10 British consumers are throwing milk away because it has gone off before they can use it all.

Confusion over correct storage and the role of packaging, as well as misconceptions over long-life alternatives, continue to be major barriers. Our findings show almost half of consumers don’t fully understand what long-life milk is. More than 80% don’t know it’s best to chill it before you drink it.

Almost half of all food waste in the UK comes from domestic sources, so educating consumers on simple changes to cut waste must be a priority.
