Sir: We at Let Toys Be Toys were disappointed to read that Ferrero is soon to launch pink and blue Kinder Surprise eggs containing dolls and cars respectively (‘Ferrero launches pink and blue Kinder eggs,’ 3 August).
Since the mid-nineties, pink and blue have frequently been used to market separately to girls and boys, although thankfully many retailers and manufacturers are starting to see the limitations of this approach. Despite Ferrero’s claims, these eggs are clearly marketed with gender in mind.
Our thousands of supporters believe strongly that children play happily with any toys until adults tell them that boys and girls should play differently. What a disappointing decision by Ferrero and wholly against the current movement towards toys which are inclusive to both boys and girls.
