Sir: Brand and marketing managers will be relieved at the news the Department of health has ruled out plans for plain alcohol packaging (30 June).

The government’s move to introduce plain packaging on tobacco was controversial and had it taken the same line with alcohol, could have opened the door to increasingly restrictive marketing practices. The fact there was “no evidence to prove it would be effective or proportionate” for alcohol was clear.

The government would be better off encouraging responsible marketing and promoting healthy lifestyles.
