Sir: As the secretary of the Specialist Cheesemakers Association, I welcome the FSA report (‘FSA to consider widening raw milk availability,’ 14 July, thegrocer.co.uk).
But I must emphasise that the standards for production and sale of raw milk for drinking are paramount. The current controls are already substantially stricter than those for milk that is to be pasteurised.
The fact that there have been no reported incidents of food poisoning for so many years shows that the controls are working and that the farmers involved take their responsibilities very seriously.
