Sir, I am writing in response to your article ‘EU restrictions put an end to weekend work at Tate & Lyle refinery’ (news, 11 February) and the letter from Baroness Sarah Ludford suggesting it is “crazy” that the EU sugar regime is causing job losses (letters, 18 February).
At Napier Brown, we have managed to increase significantly our purchases of sugar from African, Caribbean and Pacific countries over the past two years. This is because we are buying fully refined sugar, leaving the refining margin with the source country.
This has proved to be a sustainable business model for both parties, working within EU law, and we have seen increased business and customer support as a result.
