Sir: Gardeners should fight back against accusations they have “fuelled a national potato shortage’ (“Allotment amateurs making blight worse”, 13 October).

According to the Potato Council, gardeners are responsible for spreading the fungal blight that has devastated potato crops across the UK.

However, with gardeners and farmers alike having suffered a terrible growing season, the blame cannot be put on any one set of potato growers.

Ironically, in the past potato farmers were blamed for causing blight problems for gardeners by leaving diseased plants in fields, enabling fungal spores to spread on the wind.
