Sir: Nearly a third of shoppers polled by Live & Breathe want Amazon to start opening physical shops (‘Spar holds greatest trust with shoppers among local c-stores,’ 15 June). So how should retailers with physical stores respond?

Many have already responded by investing heavily in e-commerce. Some have been very successful in gaining new business online but the money to invest had to come from other parts of the business. In many cases, this has been from reducing in-store staffing and investments in core day-to-day operations in stores. At a time when Amazon is considering physical store, this is risky. The big differentiation that retailers have over Amazon is their stores and that needs to be defended.
